ONE LAST
CHANCE TO BELIEVE

This story is circulating the halls of many homes within the city of San Antonio. I
personally heard the testimony from the woman who shared this as a true event as it
was told to her while serving in a Salvation Army tent in New York City.
His name was Mark, a New York City policeman. As he began to tell his story his eyes
filled to the brim, barely able to keep the tears from rolling down his cheeks. His voice
broken and quiet for he knew he had a story to tell. He was driven to share, not knowing
the purpose. Not knowing his story would circle the globe as a testimony of what he had experienced.
He didn’t know the impact he would have on anyone. He just knew his experience had delivered a blow to him. You could see it in his eyes, bittersweet, but somehow
comforting. As you read the words of his account, imagine seeing the world from his
perspective. It was sheer, devastating, utter chaos. The horrendous noise from the sirens, the screaming, the panic, the terror. It was a scene only imaginable in the bowels
of hell.
Mark’s Testimony: When I arrived at the scene, it took many moments for the reality to
sink in. I stood back wondering what could I possibly do to help? I began to scream for
people to get out! Get away, run for your lives! Just go! I felt complete, terrifying panic.
Suddenly, something caught my attention. I jerked to see what it was, and my gut
instinct was begging God for it not to be what I knew was the truth. I saw what I hoped
was a duffle bag falling to the ground. Instinctively knowing the unimaginable was happening, I went closer, and realized my agonizing instincts were right. Oh, my God, it’s a person!
I looked up and saw people jumping from the burning inferno to their death from over 80 stories high. These people were moms, dads, spouses and someone’s precious child. I wanted to run. All I could hear screaming in my head was Oh God, Oh God!
But then a peace came over me and whispered in my ear, Now Mark, now. Don’t scream
it in your head, scream it for the people to hear. This is their last chance, this is your last
chance to make a difference for them. I ran to where they could hear me as they were
falling, and I began to scream to the top of my lungs as they continued to leap, Jesus loves you! God loves you!
The Lord is waiting on you! Tears began to fall down Mark’s cheeks, as he says to the stunned Salvation Army worker, I just wanted them to have one last chance to believe one last chance to know what was important.
When I heard this story my heart ached deeply for what Mark had shared. I began to
see images of people I knew, people I cared about, as if they were the ones who were
falling. I felt conviction and heartache for the people entwined in my life. They need me.
Some need me to whisper God loves you, Jesus loves you, He is waiting on you. Others
need me to scream from the rooftops, God is your deliverer, He is your redeemer, He is
the One who is waiting for you. Ignore everything else that is happening in your life and
concentrate on just one thing the Almighty God and His Son, who love you!
Mark was called to the scene to help. He wasn’t sure when he got there how he could
possibly do anything. For those people falling and the families they left behind, the
words he screamed were the most important words ever spoken.
We need to look up and past the circumstances in our lives. Get past our own pain and
failures. We need to realize there are people all around us who are falling. If you’re
standing next to a teenager in line somewhere, ask how are you doing, and mean it. Tell
him or her, I know times are tough right now for you because that’s part of being a teenager, but one thing will never change. Your God loves you.
Maybe there’s a lady buying groceries ahead of you. She is frazzled with babies, and
anxiously watching the register. You can see her privately praying the Lord will not let the
total go over the limited cash she has in her wallet. Get real close and tell her. I’ve been
where you are. My God wants to encourage you, hang in there. Then grab your wallet
and prove it. Whatever you spend over, I’m good for it. Don’t worry another second. As
she stares at you in disbelief, whisper in her ear, Jesus loves you, and He’s watching you. He just wanted you to know it.
A man stands across from you on the putting green. You’ve watched his body language
for most of the course, and preoccupied would
be an understatement. You know in your
heart there is something wrong. Change the focus of the round and tell him about
Jesus. Tell him about what is important, because you may never cross paths with him
again. From the outside he appears fine, but inside he may be one who is falling. He
needs you. Who cares about the score of the game? God doesn’t. He cares about that man.
God has His eye on your match, and His attention is focused on you. Do you have the
same resolve Mark had? God is telling you to move in closer. You may be the last
chance for this man to hear, God loves you.
What about the man or woman. out the corner of your eye? You have pulled up to this
stop sign a hundred times, but today there is a human being standing there with a sign.

What crosses your mind? Get a job! Please don’t come over here. Should I lock my
doors? We have no idea what happened to cause this person’s destiny. To your God
they’re a precious creation. Instead of praying they don’t make eye contact with you,
pray the Lord will give you resolve to not judge and to help. Roll down your window and proclaim the greatness of your God. It is more valuable than your dollar bill would ever be.
Look up and around! Pursue the possibility that the God of eternity has called you to
help. He may not ask you to scream at the top of your lungs He is God!, but He requires
you to at least start with a whisper. The words you speak to the next person about the
precious love of your Savior, may be the most important words they will ever hear.
Mark, our brother, thank you. Thank you from all of us for being our voice, for being an
inspiration. Thank you for reminding all of us what is important. Giving us the courage to
scream out to those around us about the only One who really can make the difference
